You'll find both "24 months" and "2T" on the same store rack, and they look almost identical. So which one does your toddler need? The short answer: they're close, but not always the same, and your child's measurements matter more than the label.
Baby sizes vs. toddler sizes
- Month sizes (like 12M, 18M and 24M) are baby sizes. They're often cut with a little more room in the seat for diapers, and sometimes with snaps for diaper changes.
- T sizes (like 2T, 3T and 4T) are toddler sizes. They're often cut a bit longer and slimmer for a child who's walking and running, and are usually easier to pull on and off during potty training.
In many brands, 24M and 2T fit a similar height and weight. In others, 2T runs slightly bigger. It varies, which is why size charts matter.
How to choose between them
- Still in diapers and crawling or just walking? Month sizes often fit better.
- Walking, running or potty training? T sizes usually suit them better.
- Between sizes? Size up. Toddlers grow fast.
Always check the size chart
The age on the label is a guide, not a promise. Measure your child's height and chest and compare them with the brand's size chart. A few examples from our own clothes:
- The Teddy plush jacket runs from 9M through 24M and on to 3T up to 6T, and is listed as true to size, so order the size they wear now.
- The Snowdrop snowsuit goes by height: 24M fits 33.5 to 37.4 inches tall, and 3T fits 37.4 to 41.3 inches.
- The Puffin puffer jacket lists chest and length for every size, starting at 18–24M with a 29.5 inch chest.

What about 18 months and 3T?
The same rule applies throughout. Month sizes end at 24M in most brands, and toddler sizes take over from 2T to 5T, before kids' sizes like 5, 6 and 7. The overlap is just around the 18M to 2T stage, when children are moving from babies to toddlers.
Quick fit checks
- Sleeves should reach the wrist.
- Pants should reach the ankle without dragging.
- They should be able to crouch, climb and reach without the top riding up.
- One-pieces and bodysuits shouldn't pull at the shoulders when they sit.
