Walk into any baby store and you'll find a whole aisle of stroller accessories. A few make everyday walks much easier. Others add weight, clutter or even risk. Here's what we think is worth buying, and what you can happily skip.
Worth it
A bunting bag for cold weather
If you walk through the winter, a bunting bag (also called a footmuff) keeps your baby warm without piles of blankets that slip off. It sits in the stroller with slots for the harness, so your baby stays buckled in.
- The Mitten bunting bag has a water-resistant outer, a crystal velvet lining, three harness-slot heights and a zip-open foot.
- The Flurry bunting bag has a superfine fleece lining, slots for a 5-point harness and a foot end that unzips to let heat out.
Both are for strollers only, never car seats. Always buckle the harness, and check your baby's neck or back so they don't overheat. More in our guide on keeping baby warm in the stroller.
A small clip-on pouch
For quick walks, you don't need the whole diaper bag. A small pouch with a couple of diapers, wipes and your keys is enough. The Posy pouch clips onto the stroller handle with a swivel clasp. Keep it light, so the stroller stays balanced.
A portable changing pad
The Robin changing pad straps onto strollers and bags and folds to 11.8 by 7.9 inches, with a wipes pocket and zip pocket. It means you can change a diaper anywhere without carrying a separate bag.
A travel bag, if you fly

A rain cover and sunshade
Many strollers include these. If yours doesn't, a cover made for your stroller model is worth having. Make sure there's airflow, and never fully drape a blanket over the stroller, since it can trap heat.
Skip (or think twice)
- Heavy bags on the handle. They can tip the stroller backward, especially when your child climbs out. Put heavy things in the basket.
- Add-ons that attach to the harness or car seat that weren't made by the car seat or stroller maker. Aftermarket inserts and strap covers haven't been tested with your seat.
- Blankets draped over the canopy to block light. They can make it very hot inside.
- Anything with long cords or strings near your baby.
Questions parents ask
Do I need a stroller footmuff?
If you walk a lot in cold weather, it's one of the most useful add-ons. In mild climates, a blanket tucked over the harness may be enough.
Can I use a bunting bag in the car seat?
Not a stroller bunting bag. Bulky layers under the harness can make it too loose in a crash. Use a blanket over the buckled harness instead.
Is it safe to hang a bag on the stroller?
A light pouch is fine. Heavy bags can tip the stroller, so use the basket for anything heavy.
