Toddler Table and Chair Size Guide: What Height Is Right?

A table and chairs sized for a toddler changes how they play, eat and create. Their feet reach the floor, they can climb on and off by themselves, and their arms rest at a natural height. The wrong size, too high or too low, means fidgeting and kneeling on the chair. Here's how to get the fit right.

The three measurements that matter

  • Seat height: from the floor to the top of the seat.
  • Table height: from the floor to the top of the table.
  • The gap between them: table height minus seat height. This controls whether elbows sit comfortably on the table.

Seat height

Your child should sit with their feet flat on the floor and knees bent at about a right angle. A quick check: measure from the floor to the back of your child's knee while they're standing. The seat should be about that height or a little lower.

As a rough guide, seats for toddlers usually fall somewhere between about 8 and 12 inches high, with younger toddlers at the lower end. Children grow at different rates, so measure your own child rather than going by age.

The gap between seat and table

A comfortable gap for young children is roughly 8 to 10 inches between the seat and the tabletop. Too small and their knees bump the table. Too big and the tabletop sits at their chest.

How the Pebble set measures up

Our Pebble kids table and chair set has a seat height of 11 inches and a table height of 19.7 inches, a gap of about 8.7 inches. The tabletop is 29.5 by 21.7 inches, enough room for two little ones side by side with crayons or a snack. Each chair has a 12.6 by 13.4 inch base and a hand hole in the back so children can move it themselves.

It needs no assembly, and the speckled plastic wipes clean. You can buy the table on its own, with one chair or two, or add extra chairs later.

Other things to look for

  • A stable base. Wide chair legs are harder to tip.
  • Easy cleaning. Snacks, crayons and play dough all end up on the table.
  • Rounded corners at toddler head height.
  • Light enough to move, but not so light it slides when they sit down.

Using it safely

  • Set it on a flat, level surface.
  • Teach children to sit on chairs, not stand or climb on them or the table.
  • Supervise, especially at snack time.

Questions parents ask

What age is a toddler table for?

Most toddlers can use one once they're walking confidently and can sit on a small chair by themselves, often from around 18 months.

How long will a toddler table fit?

It depends on your child's height. When their knees start bumping the tabletop, it's time to size up.

Can a toddler eat meals at a kids table?

Yes, with supervision. Many families use it for snacks and a high chair or booster at the family table for meals.
